Martha Albrand was born September 8, 1910 as Heidi Huberta Freybe in Rostock, Germany. Her sisters were actress Jutta Freybe and writer Johanna Sibelius, and Albrand was the name of her Danish great‐grandfather. Also known as Katrin Holland, she began her writing career in Europe before coming to the United States in 1937. Her first American novel was No Surrender, which was serialized in The Saturday Evening Post, where most of her subsequent novels were first published. Albrand was the author of nearly 40 novels of mystery and suspense, winning the Grand Prix de Littérature Policièe International Prize in France for After Midnight in 1950. Five movies were made from her novels, including Captain Carey, U.S.A. with Alan Ladd. Albrand died at her home in Manhattan on June 24, 1981.
