Verne Chute was born on May 19, 1898, near San Francisco, California. One of his first jobs was working in a cannery in San Bernardino. By 1930, he had become the proprietor of a Los Angeles bookstore. Chute began writing stories for the pulps in 1936, appearing in such magazines as Ace‐High Western Stories, Detective Novels, The Blue Book, Liberty and Thrilling Detective. His first novel, Flight of an Angel, appeared in 1946, which Anthony Boucher called a "highly professional performance." Chute wrote crime fiction, science fiction, westerns and even a couple of children's books. He died on October 1, 1986, in Sun City, Arizona.
