Curtis Evans was born in Vermillion, South Dakota but has lived most of his life in the American South. He attended the University of Alabama, Louisiana State University, where he received a history degree, and Vanderbilt University, where he received a law degree. He taught American history at LSU. He began reading crime fiction at the age of eight with Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle and has kept at it for half a century.
