Robert Emmett McDowell was born April 5, 1914, in Sentinel, Oklahoma. The family soon moved to Louisville, Kentucky, where he remained for the rest of his life. McDowell served in the Merchant Marines during WWII where he began his writing career in the pulp magazines as Emmett McDowell. He wrote stories for Amazing Stories, Astounding Science Fiction, Planet Stories, Jungle Stories and other genre magazines. In 1949 he began to shift over to detective magazines, switching to novels for Ace Books in the 1950s. In the 1950s McDowell became increasing interested in Kentucky history, and turned to writing historical fiction. He wrote one more mystery in 1965, The Hound's Tooth, as Robert McDowell. He died in Louisville on March 29, 1975.
